Catawba and Cherokee American Revolution Symposium

Explore an often-overlooked chapter of Revolutionary War history during the two-day Catawba and Cherokee American Revolution Symposium in Lancaster.

The symposium brings together 11 distinguished speakers to explore the roles and experiences of Native American communities during the American Revolution. Topics will include the Catawba Nation’s support of Patriot forces in South Carolina, the Cherokee Wars of 1776, archaeology of Catawba and Cherokee towns, historic Indian trails and landscapes, and the role of Native women during the Revolutionary era.

The program begins Friday, September 25 at noon at the Native American Studies Center with a Lunch & Learn featuring Dr. Joshua Catalano. A reception begins at 5 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. presentation exploring Catawba movements during the Revolution.

On Saturday, September 26, the symposium continues at USC Lancaster’s Bradley Building. Registration and breakfast begin at 8 a.m., followed by a full day of presentations and discussions.

The symposium’s keynote speaker is Dr. Brooke Bauer, a member of the Catawba Nation, author and professor. Presenters represent seven universities as well as the National Park Service, South Carolina State Park Service and South Carolina Humanities.

Registration is $40, plus an online processing fee. Advance registration is required.
