Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Carolina Day? If you want to know, this is the program for you. Come out to discover the dramatic story behind this holiday. Join us in the Meeting House on Sunday, June 28 at 2 p.m. Listen to a ranger read Palmetto – Symbol of Courage by Kate Salley Palmer. This book brings to life the remarkable events of June 28, 1776, when defenders on Sullivan’s Island faced a powerful British attack and helped shape the future of the colonies. Then, deepen your understanding through two engaging films. First, view a newly commissioned documentary from South Carolina 250 that explores the Battle of Sullivan’s Island and its lasting significance. Next, enjoy an ETV Classic produced 50 years ago as we look at the battle through an episode of the series And Then There Were Thirteen. In the episode, First Attack on Charleston, historian Dr. Henry Lumpkin Jr. guides viewers through the events leading up to the battle and the courageous defense that made Carolina Day a tradition still celebrated 250 years later. Discover this story of courage and determination, and why the palmetto tree became a symbol of South Carolina’s spirit.
