A program on the Battle of Hanging Rock, led by renowned historian Bert Dunkerly, will be given on Tuesday, January 20 at 7 pm at the Barron Masonic Lodge, 100 Cauthen Street in Heath Springs, SC.

Come learn about our local history and how important Lancaster County was in the Revolution.

The Battle of Hanging Rock took place on August 6, 1780, and was a pivotal action to combat the British effort to pacify the backcountry of South Carolina.

Charleston fell to the British in May of 1780, and the British set up outposts across South Carolina to support Loyalists and root out Patriots. Hanging Rock was one of these British outposts.

The site is south of Heath Springs on Flat Rock Road and has a trail with signage.

The program is sponsored by the Lancaster County 250th American Revolution Anniversary Committee, the South Carolina Sestercentennial Commission (SC250), The Friends of the Hanging Rock Battlefield and Andrew Jackson State Park. The program is a part of the Lancaster 250th American Revolution Anniversary Committee’s “Engagement Series” and paid for by a grant from the South Carolina 250 Commission.
