LAKE WATEREE STATE PARK
Looking for the best things to do at Lake Wateree State Park? Welcome to Fairfield County’s ultimate outdoor playground! A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, Lake Wateree State Park is your gateway to an unforgettable outdoor escape. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer craving your next thrill or yearning for a peaceful retreat, this South Carolina state park is full of experiences waiting to be discovered.
From water-bound activities to casual nature walks, here are the five best things to do at Lake Wateree State Park.
1. Hike the Lake Wateree Nature Trail
Get ready to explore! The Lake Wateree hiking trail is a 2.3-mile nature trail perfect for a casual walk. Start this easy, out-and-back trail from the park road or parking area. Enjoy a stroll through a shady peninsula with spur paths leading to the lakeshore. Keep an eye out for great blue herons, woodpeckers and songbirds along the way. A short loop at the end of the trail brings you back to the starting point.

2. Get Out on the Water
In case the name of the park didn’t give it away, Lake Wateree State Park is located right on a South Carolina body of water: Lake Wateree. Perfect for paddleboarding and kayaking — just be sure to apply your sunscreen before a day on the water. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent year-round. If you prefer motorized boating, there’s the convenient Lake Wateree boat ramp to launch your vessel. Spend the day water skiing, tubing or simply cruising around the lake and soaking up the sun.

3. Camp by the Lake
Make sure to BYORV (Bring Your Own RV) and get ready to enjoy some outdoor time. Lake Wateree camping at one of the park’s well-maintained campgrounds is fun for the whole family. If you are interested in RV camping in South Carolina, the park features various paved campsites equipped with water and electrical hookups, accommodating both tents and RVs. Among these, 28 sites offer additional amenities such as 50-amp electrical service and sewer hookups, and the campground includes eight pull-through sites and 23 waterfront sites.

Wake up to the sound of nature and enjoy a morning coffee with an amazing view of the lake. The park has also recently opened a playground for kids to enjoy. Make sure to book your site in advance, especially during peak seasons.
4. Fish for Bass, Crappie, Catfish and Bream
Anglers, rejoice! Lake Wateree offers some of the best fishing spots in SC for bass, crappie, catfish and bream. Fish from the shore or a boat—either way, you’re in for a good catch. Forgot your gear? No problem! The park store’s Loaner Program, sponsored by the SC Dept. of Natural Resources, has everything you need for fishing at Lake Wateree. Just remember your South Carolina fishing license.

5. Try to Spot a Bald Eagle
Grab your binoculars and camera. Lake Wateree State Park is a hotspot for wildlife. Look out for bald eagles, herons and ospreys, especially in the early mornings or late afternoons. Capture the park’s natural beauty and enjoy some peaceful South Carolina wildlife watching.
