Military correspondent, Major Felix Gregory DeFontaine found numerous ironbound boxes that contained valuable Confederate records, including both the provisional constitution and the permanent constitution. He sold them, and the provisional document ended up in the Confederate Museum in Richmond. The permanent constitution is now owned by the University of Georgia. Major DeFontaine also brought a portable printing press to Chester. The Historical Museum has copies of an issue dated April 19, 1865, printed in Chester with the headlines: GENERAL LEE A PRISONER OF WAR! OFFICERS AND MEN IN TEARS! SAD DETAILS!
